MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity generation saw a year-on-year growth of 4.3% during the initial eight months of 2026. The total output reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, surpassing the 35,935.3 GWh recorded in the same period of 2025. This increase corresponds to roughly 1,546.5 GWh. Preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated regional gains across multiple governorates. August alone produced 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July. Consequently, national electricity output stayed above its 2025 levels.

Muscat experienced the most significant rise in overall electricity generation, with a jump of 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a 44.1% increase, while Al Wusta’s output grew by 8.4%. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.5%. Dhofar saw a 4.6% rise over the same period. The data reveals that regional variations in electricity growth contributed to the overall increase in national production. Several governorates recorded higher output during this reporting interval.

During the first eight months, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah exhibited a contrasting trend, with combined electricity production decreasing by 16.4% compared to the same period of 2025. Musandam produced 376.0 GWh, maintaining a broadly unchanged output from the previous year. The regional figures indicate that most areas covered by the national data experienced increases. Overall, Oman’s total electricity generation remained higher through August 2026. These figures encompass output from January through August 2026.

    Electricity generation rises across Oman

Net electricity production also saw growth during the January to August timeframe. It increased by 4.6%, reaching 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh a year earlier. This metric includes electricity purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the increase with a 204.4% rise, followed by Al Dakhiliyah at 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar grew by 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The total national increase was approximately 1,592.1 GWh.

Net electricity output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah combined rose by 5.4%, whereas North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net output was 368.0 GWh, with its annual change rate remaining at 0.0%. Overall, national net electricity generation stayed above the level of 2025. The regional trends closely mirrored the total output movements, with several governorates registering increases during this period.

Water production decreases through August 2026

In contrast to electricity, water output in Oman declined over the same eight months. Total water production dropped by 3.5%, down to 330.65 million cubic metres from approximately 342.71 million in the previous year. Muscat’s water production fell by 6.2% to around 128.07 million cubic metres, compared to about 136.57 million during the same period of 2025. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decrease, with output declining to roughly 149.90 million cubic metres from 155.19 million cubic metres a year earlier.

Dhofar bucked the national trend, recording higher water production. Its output reached about 52.68 million cubic metres, an increase of 3.4% from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest data indicates that electricity and water figures are moving in different directions across Oman through August 2026. While electricity production increased at both total and net levels, water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s growth. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
