    WIESELBURG, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria experienced a new temperature record for July on July 31, as extreme heat affected the eastern regions. A weather station located in Wieselburg, Lower Austria, recorded a high of 40.3 degrees Celsius. This measurement beat the previous July record of 39.7 degrees, which was documented in Dellach im Drautal in 1983. GeoSphere Austria verified the record for the month. The temperature stayed below the national all-time high of 40.5 degrees, set in August 2013.

    Austria heatwave drives record high and €1.4bn damage
    Extreme heat and drought have placed fresh pressure on Austria’s economy and health.

    This recent record followed a notably hot June across much of Austria. Out of 277 weather stations tracked, 157 registered new maximum temperatures for June, while 66 stations experienced their highest temperature ever recorded in any month. Vienna hit 40.0 degrees on June 28, and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg reached 40.1 degrees a day later. Numerous lower-altitude regions also endured between 10 and 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.

    The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the heatwaves in June and late July caused socioeconomic damages totaling approximately €1.4 billion. This estimate encompasses health impacts, decreased labor productivity, agricultural losses, infrastructure strain, and increased cooling demands. It also accounts for environmental and public service pressures. This figure does not represent an official government damage estimate and differs from insured-loss data, which only reflect claims covered by insurance policies.

    Heat severity surpasses previous national records

    The team evaluated both heat events using area-degree days, a metric that combines temperature, duration, and geographic extent. The June heatwave accumulated roughly 16,700 area-degree days. The late July event was estimated between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s prior record was set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which resulted in about 22,100 area-degree days across land areas below 1,500 meters in elevation.

    The early summer heatwave coincided with a sharp increase in heat-related deaths. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported 395 such fatalities in June 2026, the highest June figure recorded since the agency began tracking this data. Heat-related mortality indicates deaths occurring above the expected level during extreme temperature periods. It does not require heat to be the sole medical cause listed on death certificates.

    Persistent drought intensifies pressure on Austria’s environment and resources

    After months of unusually low rainfall, Austria found itself in the midst of a heatwave. From January 1 to July 27, total nationwide precipitation was approximately 426 millimeters, well below the average of 609 millimeters for the same period, creating a deficit of nearly 30%. Authorities described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest since at least the early 20th century, with Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland among the regions experiencing the most significant rainfall shortages.

    Intense sunshine, high atmospheric pressure, and limited precipitation increased evaporation rates through late May, June, and July. These conditions led to reduced soil moisture levels, putting stress on crops, rivers, forests, and regional water supplies. Climate records in Austria indicate that heatwaves now occur more frequently and last longer than in previous decades, with peak temperatures during heat events rising by about three degrees from the 1980s to the 2020s. The recent July record marks another milestone in Austria’s trend of escalating extreme heat episodes.
