Global Cartography Sector Sees UN Endorsement of Equal Earth Projection to Address Map Distortions

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly passed an international resolution advocating for more precise and fairer visualizations of continental landmasses on world maps. In a recorded vote that garnered support from 107 member states, the global assembly addressed cartographic inaccuracies that tend to underrepresent Africa and other equatorial regions within the Global South. UN adopts resolution to correct world map representation as diplomatic delegations take formal action to resolve historical biases embedded within traditional cartographic standards.

UN backs Equal Earth projection to fix Mercator map errors
United Nations General Assembly hall delegates convene during formal international voting sessions.

The measure targets specifically the popular Mercator projection, which was created in the 16th century by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator for maritime navigation. Although useful for navigation, the mathematical scaling used in the Mercator model leads to exaggerated landmass sizes farther from the equator while compressing those near it. As detailed in documentation issued by the United Nations General Assembly, these technical distortions continue to influence modern textbooks, media broadcasts, digital mapping services, and government publications worldwide.

During assembly discussions, delegates recognized that cartographic distortions extend beyond technical issues into socioeconomic and cultural spheres. The assembly pointed out that inaccuracies in visual scaling shape public perceptions of the economic, political, and cultural importance of entire continents. The UN passed a resolution advocating for the adoption of equal-area alternatives, such as the Equal Earth projection introduced in 2018, which accurately shows continental landmasses in proportion to one another.

UN Approves Resolution to Address World Map Representation Errors

This decision follows a campaign led by African nations, with backing from the African Union, which submitted the draft resolution in August. Supporters argued that traditional wall maps portraying Greenland as comparable in size to Africa generate serious geographical misconceptions, considering Africa is fourteen times larger in reality. Reports from Emirates News Agency emphasized that correcting these historical visual inaccuracies is vital to fostering equitable geographic education worldwide.

Under the resolution’s framework, international agencies are directed to develop technical standards for mapping. The assembly called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the United Nations Development Programme to collaborate with academic and geospatial experts to establish updated cartographic standards. These joint efforts aim to help member states and digital media companies transition toward equal-area projection standards across various platforms.

UN Educational Institutions Tasked with Creating Reliable Spatial Standards

While advocating voluntary adoption of equal-area map projections, the resolution is non-binding and does not prohibit the use of the traditional Mercator projection or require private tech companies to alter proprietary software. Instead, the document encourages member states to integrate core cartographic principles into primary and secondary education programs. Educational authorities are urged to raise awareness among students, scientific communities, and publishers about the subtle perceptual biases caused by different map projections.

Monitoring of the UN resolution’s implementation will be overseen by international cartography and geospatial policy groups as educational bodies review textbook standards. Updates to digital mapping protocols are expected to be discussed during upcoming global geospatial summits. Official records of the assembly’s voting and technical projection details are accessible through UN registry portals.
