U.S. Food Sector Faces First Fatalities Linked to Cyclospora Outbreak in Michigan

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan health officials have confirmed two deaths connected to the state’s 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 11,234 cases as of Aug. 3. The state also recorded 193 hospitalizations through July 30. Both patients had serious underlying medical conditions. Officials said cyclosporiasis and dehydration may have affected those conditions, but they released no additional personal information.

Michigan reports first deaths tied to cyclospora outbreak
Health officials track 11,234 Michigan cyclospora cases and 193 hospitalizations.

The two patients showed symptoms before the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged the deaths in an Aug. 3 update, describing both as cyclosporiasis-related deaths involving individuals with underlying health issues. Variations exist between state and federal totals due to different reporting methods. Michigan’s figures include all cases documented during its investigation, whereas federal data typically focus on lab-confirmed infections.

A separate investigation is ongoing by federal authorities into a nine-state outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. As of July 24, officials had identified 1,947 cases associated with Taco Bell exposure. At least 98 patients required hospitalization. Reported illness onset ranged from June 22 to July 20. The comprehensive federal count initially did not include Michigan’s two deaths, which were confirmed after the update.

Market Recall Removes Contaminated Iceberg Lettuce

Taylor Farms de Mexico withdrew iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. marketplace. The recall encompassed several food-service products and certain Marketside lettuce sold through Walmart stores. Retail items affected included iceberg salad and shredded iceberg lettuce with use-by dates from July 18 through Aug. 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed the recalled lettuce to 27 states. Taco Bell ceased using the supplier’s lettuce on July 17.

Not every case reported in Michigan has been definitively linked to the recalled lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services still considers lettuce or salad greens a potential source. Investigators have yet to identify a specific product, farm, or supplier responsible for the entire outbreak in the state. Additionally, the two deaths have not been connected to any particular recalled item. Federal officials note that the identified lettuce cluster is only part of the national cyclosporiasis activity currently under investigation.

Cyclosporiasis Can Persist for Multiple Weeks

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis. Infection usually occurs after consuming contaminated food or water. Typical symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, bloating, and fatigue. These symptoms generally appear about a week after exposure, though timing can differ. If left untreated, the illness can last over a month and may recur after temporary improvement.

Health authorities recommend discarding recalled iceberg lettuce or returning it to the place of purchase. Consumers should also thoroughly wash containers and surfaces that have contacted the product. Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice, especially if they recently consumed iceberg lettuce. Older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of dehydration. Michigan health officials continue to update case totals as local and state investigators review new reports.
