OpenAI mentioned that the update results in more targeted answers and minimizes unnecessary details when a straightforward response suffices. Paid subscribers also get a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop, allowing users to select the level of processing ChatGPT applies to research, planning, coding, writing, and other tasks.
The company further reported a decrease in factual inaccuracies in internal tests of its newest models, particularly for prompts related to finance, medicine, and law that require precise factual responses. OpenAI noted that answers containing at least one factual error decreased by roughly 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was approximately 68%. The firm also highlighted improvements in Sol’s handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when accuracy was critical to the response.
Unlimited messaging maintains separate safety protocols
OpenAI stated that its latest ChatGPT models include enhanced protections for users believed to be under 18. These safeguards aim to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could interfere with real-world relationships. They also establish boundaries around sexual content, eating disorders, hazardous activities, restricted substances, and graphic violence. The company mentioned that new evaluations have been added for responses involving younger users. This update primarily affects the main ChatGPT experience rather than all OpenAI products using GPT-5.6 models. The company clarified that GPT-5.6 Sol versions utilized in ChatGPT Work and Codex will not change with this release. Paid users can now access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls.
