BEIJING, CHINA / RankWire.AI / – Artificial intelligence is increasingly being incorporated into China’s traditional Chinese medicine sector, linking digital innovations with education, research initiatives, and clinical practices. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has created Xinhuo TCM, a large language model tailored specifically to traditional medical knowledge. This system utilizes classical texts, medical theories, herbal data, prescriptions, and educational resources. Its initial version was launched in 2025, with ongoing enhancements throughout 2026.

Xinhuo TCM functions as a model with 70 billion parameters designed for applications in traditional Chinese medicine. Its capabilities include supporting education, research, administrative tasks, and international communication within the field. Students can inquire about herbal combinations and receive detailed explanations of formulas and underlying medical principles. Additionally, the system facilitates navigation through vast collections of traditional medicine knowledge, providing educators and researchers with quicker access to relevant material that previously required extensive manual effort.

AI is also making its way into practical training of traditional medical techniques. Researchers have developed an intelligent robot capable of demonstrating massage methods used in traditional Chinese medicine instruction. This technology offers students an alternative way to observe standardized movements during their training. Other digital initiatives focus on managing medical knowledge, pre-consultation systems, and diagnostic support. Collectively, these applications demonstrate how Chinese institutions are integrating AI into multiple facets of the traditional medicine system.

Digital strategies facilitate AI integration into traditional medicine practices

From 2026 to 2030, China has embedded artificial intelligence into its national development plan for traditional Chinese medicine. The National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in collaboration with the National Development and Reform Commission, issued this plan in July. It emphasizes the creation of high-quality AI datasets specifically for traditional medicine and promotes digital infrastructure, intelligent clinical support, and smart traditional medicine hospitals. The expansion also involves primary healthcare facilities as part of the digital transformation.

The policy emphasizes data management as a key element in expanding AI adoption. It advocates for stricter regulations concerning data classification, protection, and compliant circulation within the traditional medicine sector. The authorities also endorse standardized intelligent equipment for clinical services, research, and education. Digital systems are expected to organize medical literature and structure information from experienced practitioners, making large volumes of traditional medicine data more accessible for search, study, and management.

AI’s role extends to clinical support systems in traditional medicine

Researchers are also exploring the application of artificial intelligence within traditional Chinese medicine healthcare environments. Recent investigations have looked into AI pre-consultation systems that gather patient information prior to a physician’s appointment. In one evaluation, doctors responded more favorably to the information collection process than to several decision-support functions. The study highlighted limitations related to complaint capture, workflow integration, documentation, and accessibility for older patients. These results offer valuable insights into how such systems perform in routine clinical settings.

Current AI initiatives in China encompass traditional medicine education, research, data management, and clinical support tools. The technology helps organize extensive knowledge bases and structures information before consultations. National policy officially recognizes AI datasets and digital health infrastructure as integral to the development of traditional medicine. Ongoing projects include specialized language models, intelligent training devices, and hospital-oriented systems, all centered on maintaining traditional Chinese medicine as the core focus of each application.
