Ebola Crisis in DR Congo Drives Market and Public Health Concerns Amid Rising Death Toll

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – As of August 7, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in 1,916 fatalities, according to official data. The total number of confirmed infections has reached 4,209, marking an increase of 29 deaths from the previous figure of 1,887. Authorities also reported that 595 patients are currently under isolation care, and 828 individuals have recovered from the disease.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak passes 1,900 deaths
Health teams track Ebola infections across affected communities in eastern DR Congo.

The province of Ituri remains the epicenter, with 3,636 confirmed cases and 1,551 deaths recorded. North Kivu follows with 470 cases and 315 deaths. Haut Uele has reported 91 infections accompanied by 44 fatalities, while Tshopo has documented nine cases and five deaths. South Kivu’s outbreak comprises three cases and one death. Overall, the outbreak has impacted 53 of the 140 health zones across the five provinces experiencing confirmed cases.

The latest daily update added 89 confirmed infections and 21 deaths to the national tally. Of these new cases, 73 were identified in Ituri, while North Kivu contributed 12 more, and Haut Uele accounted for four. Health teams are currently monitoring 83.4% of the contacts identified in affected areas. Authorities continue to reconcile data from surveillance, laboratory, and clinical records as they revise case and death counts.

Ituri remains the focal point of the expanding outbreak

The Democratic Republic of the Congo declared the outbreak in May after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the Bundibugyo virus. The Ministry of Health has led efforts in surveillance, testing, isolation, contact tracing, and clinical management across the impacted regions. Infection prevention protocols and safe burial procedures are also being implemented to curb further spread. The outbreak has extended into several eastern provinces where conflict, population movement, and overburdened healthcare systems complicate control measures.

Symptoms of Ebola include fever, intense fatigue, body pain, vomiting, and other severe health issues. As the disease progresses, some patients experience bleeding. This outbreak is the 17th Ebola incident officially recorded in the country since the virus was first identified in 1976. The World Health Organization supports response activities such as case detection, laboratory testing, patient treatment, and infection control as teams track transmission across various provinces.

Bundibugyo virus lacks a licensed vaccine

Bundibugyo virus differs from the Zaire Ebola strain targeted by existing licensed vaccines. Currently, no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical teams rely on supportive care, which includes hydration, symptom management, and close patient monitoring. Ongoing research investigates potential vaccines and experimental treatments. By late July, Uganda had confirmed 20 cases of Bundibugyo and reported two deaths, with no new cases since June 21.

The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo represents the largest known epidemic caused by Bundibugyo virus and ranks as the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record by confirmed case numbers. The majority of infections and fatalities continue to be concentrated in Ituri and North Kivu. Authorities persist with laboratory testing, contact tracing, patient isolation, and clinical care while continually updating national statistics as new surveillance information becomes available.
