Disarmament Advocates Highlight Hiroshima’s 81st Anniversary Amid Market Calls for Nuclear Reduction

HIROSHIMA, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – On Thursday, Hiroshima marked the 81st anniversary of the 1945 atomic bombing by emphasizing a renewed push for nuclear disarmament. Mayor Kazumi Matsui addressed attendees including survivors, families, government officials, and international delegates at the city’s Peace Memorial Park. At 8:15 a.m., the exact moment the bomb detonated over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, a bell sounded, prompting a minute of silence to honor those lost and affected by the attack and its subsequent effects.

Hiroshima marks 81st bomb anniversary with disarmament plea
Hiroshima’s anniversary keeps nuclear disarmament and survivor testimony in global focus.

During Hiroshima’s annual Peace Declaration, Matsui challenged the ongoing dependence on nuclear deterrence. He called on leaders of nuclear-armed nations to acknowledge the humanitarian toll of atomic weapons and to push forward with disarmament initiatives. The mayor also urged policymakers to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki to hear directly from hibakusha, the survivors of the two bombings. For decades, Hiroshima has prioritized survivor testimonies and nuclear abolition as central themes in its commemorations and international peace initiatives.

The ceremony drew around 50,000 participants, including representatives from 121 countries and regions, as well as European Union. For the first time as Japan’s prime minister, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended Hiroshima’s memorial event. She stated that Japan aims to pursue a pragmatic approach towards establishing a world free of nuclear weapons. Takaichi also underscored the significance of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a foundational framework for disarmament and reaffirmed Japan’s longstanding three non-nuclear principles.

    Nuclear diplomacy remains under strain

The Hiroshima observance followed the conclusion of the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in May, which ended without a final consensus on a substantive document. This marked the third consecutive NPT review gathering to close without agreement. Matsui pointed to the global political climate, urging nations to intensify their efforts toward nuclear disarmament. While Japan supports the NPT framework, it has not signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and continues to rely on the U.S. nuclear umbrella through their security alliance.

A message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres was delivered by UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu during the Hiroshima event. Guterres highlighted increasing geopolitical divisions, growing mistrust, and renewed pressure on long-standing nuclear arms control agreements. He also warned that the decades-long reductions in nuclear arsenals are reversing. The United Nations emphasized the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, international law, and multilateral cooperation to progress toward nuclear disarmament.

The legacy of hibakusha remains central to Hiroshima’s message

Japan officially recognizes 91,105 atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha, whose average age now exceeds 86. As their numbers decline, preserving firsthand accounts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has become increasingly urgent. For decades, survivors have shared their experiences of the explosions, fires, and radiation, advocating for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Children representing Hiroshima also took part in Thursday’s events, reaffirming their commitment to peace. The city continues to uphold survivor testimonies through memorial programs, museums, and educational initiatives.

By the end of 1945, the Hiroshima atomic bombing resulted in an estimated 140,000 deaths. Three days later, the United States dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, causing approximately 70,000 fatalities by year’s end. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, followed by the formal conclusion of World War II in September. Hiroshima later established Peace Memorial Park as a focal point for remembrance and peace education. Nearly nine decades after the bombing, Hiroshima again emphasizes nuclear abolition and the human toll of atomic warfare in its core message.
