GUATEMALA / RankWire.AI / – The alert level in Guatemala has been elevated to the highest in three departments due to the activity of Fuego volcano, which emitted ash, lava, and hazardous pyroclastic flows. Authorities issued a red alert for Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, and Escuintla, while an orange alert remained in effect across the nation during this emergency. Officials reported that ashfall impacted approximately 29,000 individuals across 18 communities, with rescue teams continuing evacuations near vulnerable ravines and settlements.

Fuego volcano eruption puts Guatemala regions on red alert
Evacuations continue near Fuego volcano as ashfall reaches several departments.

On Monday, the eruption intensified as gas and ash columns ascended above the volcano’s crater. Pyroclastic flows descended five ravines along the western and southwestern slopes of Fuego. Some flows traveled between five and seven kilometers from the vent. These rapid-moving currents contain intensely hot gases, volcanic rocks, and ash. Monitoring teams also tracked an ash cloud drifting west and northwest, covering multiple regions of Guatemala.

The initial evacuations targeted El Porvenir and Las Lajitas in the San Juan Alotenango municipality, moving approximately 250 residents from about 50 families. As ashfall and volcanic dangers persisted, shelter capacity expanded, and more residents left their communities. Five shelters currently accommodate roughly 1,699 people, with three additional sites being prepared. Evacuated families are provided with meals, medical aid, security, and essential supplies at these temporary facilities.

    Relief operations intensify near Fuego

The CONRED disaster management agency coordinated local evacuation efforts and relief activities within the affected regions. Authorities advised residents to steer clear of ravines and adhere to guidance from emergency personnel. They also recommended safeguarding stored food and water from ash deposits. In exposed communities, residents received instructions to wear masks or damp cloths over their faces. Response teams remain on-site to monitor evolving conditions and assist local governments.

INSIVUMEH, Guatemala’s national volcano and weather institute, monitored the eruption through field observers, sensors, cameras, and satellite data. Seismic activity was fueled by ongoing emissions of gas, lava, and ash. Pyroclastic flows were observed in the Seca, Taniluyá, Ceniza, Las Lajas, and Honda ravines. Ash dispersed over Sololá, Quetzaltenango, Suchitepéquez, Retalhuleu, and San Marcos, extending beyond the three departments under the red alert.

    Travel disruptions follow volcanic emergency

Authorities have shut down National Route 14, a key roadway near Fuego. The Education Ministry canceled classes in neighboring communities as ash fall and emergency activities disrupted normal routines. Road maintenance crews monitored access points and changing travel conditions around the volcano. La Aurora International Airport continued operations under volcanic ash safety protocols. Security personnel patrolled evacuated neighborhoods to secure property and assist residents who had evacuated.

Rainfall presents an additional threat by mixing with loose ash, rocks, and volcanic debris, potentially forming lahars that travel swiftly through riverbeds and steep ravines. According to latest reports, no structural damage has been recorded in the affected communities. Mudflows have also not reached populated areas. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Guatemala City, Fuego is among Central America’s most active volcanoes.
