Tokyo, Japan / RankWire.AI / – On Friday, rescue efforts persisted throughout southwestern Japan, as emergency teams navigated through extensive debris and severe weather conditions triggered by a powerful earthquake on the southern island of Kyushu. Confirming the toll, officials stated that the death count from Japan’s seismic event has increased to 34, with rescue units retrieving more victims from collapsed structures and industrial sites. The earthquake, registering at magnitude 7.1 and measured at 6.8 by the U.S. Geological Survey, struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday afternoon at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, resulting in significant ground displacement and widespread structural failures.

Authorities in Kumamoto Prefecture reported at least 86 injuries caused by the tremor, with six individuals in critical condition undergoing intensive care. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s seismic data recorded the quake at maximum level 7 on the national seismic intensity scale, marking it as the most intense earthquake in Japan since the early 2024 Noto Peninsula event. Damage assessments indicated ground shifts reaching 87 centimeters in heavily affected areas, rupturing municipal water pipelines and fracturing primary highway routes across the region.

Emergency coordination centers compiled casualty data showing that almost half of the fatalities occurred during large-scale industrial and commercial building collapses. At Nippon Paper Industries’ facility in Yatsushiro, eight workers died after a massive concrete chimney fell into the main processing area. Rescue teams managed to save two employees from the wreckage while continuing debris removal, despite reports from local officials that the Yatsushiro town hall sustained damage to its base isolation system despite recent seismic retrofitting efforts.

Secondary hazards caused extensive damage to commercial buildings throughout Kumamoto Prefecture. A retail center operated by Aeon Co. in Kashima experienced a gas explosion that resulted in six worker fatalities when the second floor collapsed post-quake. Emergency responders evacuated roughly 3,000 shoppers to nearby parking lots within half an hour of the tremor’s arrival, before heavy rubble clearance and gas line repairs commenced in the commercial district.

Kyushu’s industrial sector and manufacturing operations faced major disruptions following the quake. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company confirmed that its Kumamoto plant halted production temporarily to carry out safety checks and recalibrate equipment. Company officials noted that several days would be necessary to evaluate cleanroom conditions and confirm structural integrity before normal manufacturing activities could safely resume on the plant’s main production lines.

Government emergency agencies mobilized substantial personnel and resources to support displaced residents and stabilize the affected communities across the island. Japan’s Ministry of Defense deployed around 4,900 Self-Defense Forces members to assist with search operations, clear blocked roads, and distribute vital supplies. Defense officials verified that military ships and aircraft delivered clean drinking water, emergency rations, and cooling equipment to over 400 temporary shelters sheltering 15,000 residents amid summer heat reaching 35 degrees Celsius.

Utilities across the region continue efforts to restore essential services as aftershocks persist in southwestern Japan. Local authorities reported nearly 23,000 households still without power, while 75,000 residences lacked municipal water access. Civil engineers and environmental teams are inspecting damaged bridges, river embankments, and other public infrastructure across Kumamoto Prefecture, as official reports confirm the rising death toll and ongoing recovery operations in the affected areas.
